Easton, MA (May 8, 2026) –The University of Rhode Island Rams men’s and women’s
teams jumped out to early leads after day one of competition at the 2026 New England
Intercollegiate Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Stonehill College in Easton, MA.
The two-day meeting includes more than forty intercollegiate teams from around the six- state region. The men’s championships began in 1887 at Charter Oak Park, Hartford, CT. It is the second oldest collegiate track conference in the USA, behind only the “Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association of America” (IC4A) Conference. The URI men chalked up 46 points after day one to take the early lead over Central Connecticut (38) and Southern Connecticut (30). The Rams have won New England outdoor titles four times in the past 11 years.
The Lady Rams scorched the track on day one, amassing a total of 67 and one-half points to easily outdistance Southern Connecticut (31) and Saint Anselm (14). The URI women were second last year behind UMass Amherst. This year marks the 48th Women’s Championships, which began in 1976 at UMass Amherst.
Annually a power event for the URI men, the Rams went 1-2-4 in the pole vault to amass a total of 22 points to jettison their lead on day one. “We were up and down in several events, but overall, this was a good start for the men,” said URI men’s coach Trant Baltzell. “The pole vault was certainly a key for us today. Despite the windy
conditions our freshman, Carson Dean, was great, clearing 4.70m|15-5. He would have gone much higher had the conditions been more conducive. I think we should be in pretty good shape as we head into day two.” Both Dean and teammate,
sophomore Nathan Park, cleared 4.70m | 15-5. However, Dean cleared on his second attempt, Park on his third. Both jumpers then passed at 4.80m | 15-9, then failed to clear 4.90m | 16- 3⁄4, giving Dean the win.
Fitchburg State senior, Liam Bourassa claimed an unusual double on opening day. He wonboth the hammer throw and the javelin on day one. A highly unusual double. He took the hammer throw with a toss of 57.27m | 187-10, to outdistance Grayson Golda by 10 inches. Golda moved from sixth spot into second place with his final
toss of the competition at 57.00m | 187-0. Additionally, Bourassa torched the field in the javelin with a solid throw of 69.40m| 227-8, one of the top throws in NEICAAA Championship history. He bettered second place finisher, Trevor Dixon (Southern Connecticut) by over 36 feet. The men’s 5000 meter run saw Central Connecticut’s, Aidan Bodge, better the field in a close race, winning in 14:54.15 over runner-up Ryan Pereira (Stonehill) 14:55.72. Third went to Colton Sallum (Southern Connecticut) 14:56.39. Just 2.24 seconds separate the top three finishers.
UMass Amherst sophomore, Maia Perillo, captured the women’s pole vault with a jump of 3.60m | 11-9 3⁄4. She had finished 11th in this event last year as a frosh. The URI women racked up 35 points in both the 5000- meters and hammer throw. They went 2-3-6 in the 5000-meters and 1-3-7 in the hammer, won by junior Alyssa Yankee, with a toss of 53.95m | 177-0. Haley Oliver (Rhode Island College) captured the women’s 10,000 meters in 31:11.60, defeating runner-up, Peyton Dauphinais (Southern Connecticut) by 18 seconds.
The first day of the men’s 10-event, two-day decathlon saw URI’s John Santos sprint
to an early lead and never look back. The senior covered the opening100 meters, in 10.96 [+2.5]. He won four of the first five events for an opening day total of 3748 points, giving him a 303-point lead over second place, Peter Hogan (Saint Anselm). Day two of the decathlon is tomorrow.

Day 2: Rhode Island Men and Woman dominate at the New England Intercollegiate Outdoor
Easton, MA (May 10, 2026) – Piggybacking on their strong start in the opening day of
competition at the 2026 England Intercollegiate Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the University of Rhode Island men’s and women’s teams dominated on the final day at Stonehill College under a backdrop of damp and partial rainy conditions.
The URI men amassed a total of 231 points, one of the highest point totals in meeting history dating back to 1887. Southern Connecticut was runner-up with 153, followed by Central Connecticut with 96. Rounding out the top five were Stonehill, 71 and New Haven, 37. A total of 20 teams competed in the men’s division.
The Lady Rams netted a total of 186 1⁄2 points to easily outdistance Southern Connecticut (109) and UMass Amherst (78). Rounding out the top-5 were host Stonehill (61) and St. Anselm (45 1⁄2). Twenty-three teams scored in the women’s competition.
The URI men got things rolling early this morning grabbing an early 16 points in the
men’s 3000-meters steeplechase. The Rams finished 1-3, led by junior Nick Martin’s school record of 8:47.25 and solidly backed up by the third-place finish of freshman, Matthew Lucas, finishing in 9:21.54. Martin’s time was also an NCAA qualifier in the event. Shortly thereafter, URI crushed it in the 1500 meters grabbing places 1-3-5-6. That gave the Rhody men an additional 23 points and the rout was on.
“Certainly, very pleased with the overall team performances today,” noted head coach Trent Baltzall, now in his fifth year as head men’s coach. “Very happy for Nick Ryan (steeplechase), Jordan Maddox (1500) and Israel Henriques-Setho (long jump) for their school records. They were our big three today sparking the team” UMass Amherst captured the 4x100m Relay (41.08) over Southern Connecticut (41.34). Double winner in the long and short hurdles was Osaretin Osagie (Southern Connecticut) taking the 110mH in 14.14 and doubling back in the 400IH in 52.36. Rhode Island’s Elias Sposato captured the 400m in a solid 46.75 while the 200m went to Logan Montgomery (St. Anselm) 21.31.
In the meeting’s final event, the foursome from Southern Connecticut captured the 4x400m relay in 3:10.04. Rhode Island’s John Santos, the day one leader in the decathlon with a lead of 303 points, no heighted in the pole vault putting him essentially out of contention. He then withdrew from the 1500 meters, allowing Southern Connecticut frosh, Aidan Lanciault, to claim victory.
Solid performances in the field events and the 1500 meters propelled the Lady Rams to
victory in the 50th NEICAAA Women’s Outdoor Championships. URI scored in 20 of the 21 events contested, including 22 1⁄2 points in the pole vault and 18 in the hammer throw during the two days of competition. In the pole
Vault, led by runner-up, Charlotte Moscovici (3.60 |11-11 3⁄4), teammates, Sara Shipton and Olivia Priest tied for third, while sophomore, Allison Vigue ended up tied for fifth during the first day of competition. From thereon, the Lady Rams continued to increase their margin of victory over runner-up Southern Connecticut.
Alyssa Yankee led another trio of URI scorers in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 53.95 | 1770. Her teammates, Madison Boucher and Brooke Rubush were third and seventh respectfully. Macy Daigle won the high jump for the Lady Rams by two inches at 5-5 3⁄4 over Alissa Hurd of Central Connecticut. The shot-put saw Southern
Connecticut go 1-2 with their sophomore duo of Kayla Johnson (13.60 | 44-7 1⁄2) and Darla Jagrosse (13.52 | 44-4 3⁄4). The senior from Wellesley, Ella Whinney, ran uncontested to victory in the 3000m steeplechase, winning by 39 seconds in
10:42.18.
The closest finish of the day in the women’s 4x100m relay, saw URI and UMass Amherst
separated by only 8/1000 of a second, with the Rams getting the nod at the tape 46.24. Successfully defending her title in the 100m hurdles was UMass Boston’s Aryianna Garceau, winning in 13.41 seconds ahead of Rhode Island frosh, Zarah Singleton. URI junior, Zoe Catrambone outdueled Boston University’s Olivia Duca in the homestretch of the 800 meters to take the title in 2:10.60. Catrambone was 14th in this event last year. And finally, Southern Connecticut took home gold in both the 4x800m relay (9:20.11) and the 4x400m relay (3:46.46).
